The Duo, the Double, the Doppelgänger, are fundamental themes throughout the history of creation, literary as well as artistic. And in any Duo the notion of Duel is revealed: the duo, fundamental to reproduction; the duel, sometimes essential for survival. Video, an eminently literary medium which makes it possible to combine "sound, writing, image and editing all at the same time, mixing fiction with documentary" (Enrique Ramirez), is the medium of the Duo par excellence. - whether by the double projection, mirror image, speculum mentis, the artist's duo with himself, such as Shaun Gladwell (double in all its forms) or Jhafis Quintero (notably in Knock Out, a real duel with its shadow), or the staged duo, as with Dana Hoey, Shannon Plumb, Janet Biggs.
But one of the most impressive videographers of the duo is certainly Tom Pnini, virtuoso of the mirror illusion and his importance in the Lacanian production of the self-image: The Light Fantastic Toe features two couples of identical twins playing different roles in similar scenes, making it look like a duplication of the screen, while it is the stereoscopic image, here, which is an illusion.
