THE METAMORPHIC BEAR

WEDNESDAY 22 MARCH 2017, TO 19H30

CONFERENCE PROPOSED BY THE REVIEW Billebaude

A legend circulates among the Gwich'in hunters of Alaska, that of Ch'attan, "the ice bear", a man-eating brown bear, covered in frozen armor making him invincible. Historically, in their myths, the Gwich'in tell how
living things change. In their cosmology, where animals are seen as people,  the identity of bears is not fixed. Nastassja Martin studies the manifestations and reconfigurations of animism among the peoples of the Great

North and the way they respond to the uncertainties of the environment, upset by climate change.
